social media marketing

Updated:

Social media marketing is the process of using social platforms to share valuable content, build a community, and create opportunities for traffic. Teams that win build strategies organized around three core pillars: content to attract attention, community to earn trust, and commerce to turn engagement into business results.

This post dives into the three C¡¯s of social media marketing. Teams can use these points of connection to build relationships and, eventually, drive sales. Here¡¯s how the three C¡¯s attract attention.

Content

The first pillar of social media marketing is content. Valuable content gives audiences a reason to follow a brand. Plus, consistent back to their website.

Ultimately, social media points back to the brand¡¯s website. But the conversion potential is lost if the site has nothing new to offer once visitors arrive.Producing fresh content on a regular basis will keep people coming back for more. There are lots of ways to create content for social media and websites, including:

  • Writing blog posts and ebooks.
  • Hosting audio interviews and podcasts.
  • Leading webinars.
  • Posting short videos.

Blogging can be a great way to maintain a regular flow of fresh content. For those just starting out, here are some useful tips when it comes to launching a blog .

  • Set up an editorial calendar for the blog to help manage the schedule.
  • Get into the habit of writing a few posts per week at least three months before the blog goes live. This will result in an archive of blog content that the team can use to start off with a bang.
  • Launch a blog with at least 10 articles already posted rather than one lonely post. This will give readers a taste of the blog¡¯s flavor and what it¡¯s all about.

    Community

The next C of social media marketing is community. Social media only thrives because of the people involved. Community building helps brands earn trust and stay visible on social media. When businesses engage their audience consistently through participating in social media, they create stronger relationships that increase sharing, conversation, and return visits.

Put aside the marketing mindset and be real. Followers and fans want to engage with the people behind the content shared on social media. Marketers can¡¯t afford to be one of those people on social constantly blasting out links to a blog without any human interaction. Instead, create a two-way dialogue with followers and foster social experiences.

For example, I¡¯ve used X to convene small business owners weekly. I hosted a chat each Wednesday from 8 to 9 PM ET called #Smallbizchat, during which I provided a guest expert. My audience came to learn and interact with each other. It worked because I offered valuable content as well as discussion and engagement.

To succeed in social media, teams have to get out there and build a network. The more social and interactive, the better the chances of building a powerful social media brand. Social media is a great way to build relationships on and offline.

The biggest form of flattery online is when others share your content. So, I use a 4:1 ratio of sharing others¡¯ content over my own.

To build community, start with a few simple relationship-building activities, like:

    • Posting on forums and commenting on relevant blogs.
    • Connecting with existing contacts across multiple social networks.
    • Inviting guest contributors or writing guest posts for other blogs.

    Commerce

The final C of the puzzle is commerce. In a nutshell, customers do business with people they like, know, and trust. On the internet, it takes that will result in commerce.

Social media marketing drives traffic, generates , and supports sales when brands earn trust. For marketing teams, that means social activity should connect to measurable business outcomes, not just engagement metrics. But what makes social media so appealing is the more informal, laid-back attitude.

In social media marketing, promotion works best after building trust. A simple way to approach that is:

    • Attracting prospects with high-quality content.
    • Engaging them through direct interaction.
    • Introducing an offer only after trust has been built.

Once a prospect is engaged, keep the conversation focused on helping rather than selling. That usually means:

    • Asking and answering questions.
    • Building trust before introducing business discussions.
    • Talking about the brand¡¯s solutions and the results the team helps clients achieve.

Frequently Asked Questions About Social Media Marketing

How do beginners start social media marketing?

Start with one or two platforms where the brand¡¯s potential audience already spends time. Then, publish useful content consistently and focus on conversations before promotions. A simple strategy built around content, community, and commerce gives beginners a clear place to start.

What is the 50/30/20 rule for social media?

The 50/30/20 rule is a content mix framework: 50% of posts should inform or entertain, 30% should engage people in conversation, and 20% can promote an offering. It helps marketers balance value with promotion.

Which social media platform is best for marketing?

The best platform depends on where the brand¡¯s potential audience is and what kind of content the team can create consistently. For most businesses, it¡¯s better to focus on the channels that match buyers and goals instead of trying to be everywhere at once.

What does social media marketing do for a business?

Social media marketing helps businesses build awareness, attract website traffic, grow relationships, and generate leads. Done well, it connects content and conversion in one strategy.

Put the Three C¡¯s to Work

Social media success comes from posting with purpose. Content brings people in, community keeps them engaged, and commerce turns that trust into real business results. Start by showing up with content worth sharing. Treat the audience like a community worth building, and let commerce follow naturally from those relationships.

Do that consistently, and social media works like a growth channel.
