I made a few thousand dollars from my first online store without knowing much about how to create a website to sell products. That was over 10 years ago. Today, I¡¯ve built, scaled, and exited three business websites and love helping others do the same.
In this article, I¡¯ll walk you through how to sell stuff on your own website. But first, let¡¯s build your ecommerce site in just seven steps by using a no-code website builder.
How to Create a Website to Sell Products
Online marketplaces like Etsy and Amazon are great starting points when you¡¯re new to selling online. But learning how to sell stuff on your own website becomes critical if you want to build a brand and boost your profit margins.
±á±ð°ù±ð¡¯²õ how to set up your own ecommerce site.
Step 1: Know your audience and pick a domain name.
Every business, including those in ecommerce, must begin by knowing its audience. Your target audience will shape everything in the website creation process ¡ª from your site¡¯s design to the keywords it targets.
For this, I recommend creating at least one buyer persona. This will make your target audience feel real and concrete, helping you to more easily decide what¡¯s best for them. If you have a CRM like ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø you can use your CRM data to get more accurate, data-driven context. But if you don¡¯t, you can simply think about your favorite customers or companies you¡¯ve worked with in the past, and flesh it out from there.
±á±ð°ù±ð¡¯²õ an example of a persona that I created using ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø¡¯s free tool. I simply answered questions about my ideal client, and it created the buyer persona for me.

Now, instead of viewing my ¡°target audience¡± as something faceless and nebulous, I can clearly picture Jordan, her needs and pain points, her preferences. I can even picture my ideal clients from the past and what I loved about working with them. This makes it easier to make decisions about my website and what would best suit my buyer persona, Jordan.
Use the tool and save the output for later. You¡¯ll need it in step 6 when we optimize your site for search.
Now, onto domains. Your website¡¯s domain is its online address, the characters your customers will type into their browser to find your site. Make sure it¡¯s short, easy to remember, and brandable. Once you decide on a name, check if it¡¯s available, and then buy and register it.
ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø's Free Website Builder
Create and customize your own business website with an easy drag-and-drop website builder.
- Build a website without any coding skills.
- Pre-built themes and templates.
- Built-in marketing tools and features.
- And more!
My domain for this example? Well, it¡¯s quite simple, as it¡¯s my name: amyrigby.co.
If you need help choosing and registering a domain, check out the two guides below:
- How to Register Your Website¡¯s Domain Name (For Free)
- How to choose a domain name (from someone who¡¯s done it many times)
Pro tip: Once you buy a domain from a registrar, ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø lets you without upgrading to a paid plan (just note that the free plan includes ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø branding; paid plans do not).

Step 2: Choose a website builder and ecommerce platform.
Once you¡¯re done with the technical part, choose a website builder, such as ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø WordPress, or Wix. A website builder hosts your website and lets you design it using premade templates and no-code editors.
Important note before you begin: If you¡¯re selling digital products (ebooks, PDFs, software, etc.) or services (consulting, writing, coaching, etc.), ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø can handle this and connects natively to ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Smart CRM, making managing customer relationships easier. But if you¡¯re selling multiple physical products, I am going to save you the headache by recommending a dedicated ecommerce platform like Shopify. It¡¯s built specifically for selling large catalogs of physical products.
To create a website to sell products, ensure your ecommerce website builder has the following capabilities:
- Payment processing
- Inventory management
- Customer support
For this example, I¡¯m using . It¡¯s super easy to use with pre-built templates. No coding or tech skills required at all. It¡¯s best suited for B2B websites selling a few digital products or selling services.

Pro tip: ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø itself is not an ecommerce platform, but if you combine the free website builder on Content Hub with Revenue Hub, you can add ecommerce functionalities like payment links. You can also use third-party apps like to add a shopping cart to ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø sites. This works best for B2B websites selling a few products or services (like my freelance writing site). For more complex product catalogs, opt for dedicated ecommerce platforms; I have used and can recommend Shopify.
If you don¡¯t create your website directly on an e-commerce builder (e.g., Shopify), you¡¯ll need to integrate ecommerce functionality with options like:
- Shopify Buy Button: You can integrate the Shopify ¡°Buy Button¡± feature into your existing website. It allows you to add shopping functionality without moving your entire site.
- WooCommerce: If your main website is on WordPress, you can add WooCommerce to manage your store. It integrates perfectly with WordPress sites.
- Ecwid: A flexible ecommerce solution that you can add to any website, including those built with custom code or other CMS platforms.
Pro tip: With the you can incorporate ecommerce functionalities, such as payments, directly within ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø (I¡¯ll cover more of that below). And if you want to use ecommerce platforms like Shopify or Wix, you can easily sync them with ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø using the or the .
Step 3: Refine the design.
At this step, it¡¯s time to adjust the overall design of your website template, including fonts, images, and colors. I¡¯ll walk you through how I built an example website with .
Within , you have the option of using prebuilt website templates or generating a website with AI.

To test the , I typed a description of my freelance writing business:

The builder then used AI to generate a website based on my description. Pretty cool, huh?

Now, of course, as with any AI output, I still need to review and refine it. The AI doesn¡¯t know my business as well as I do, so I need to rewrite some of the descriptions. It also included photos that are more like placeholders, so I¡¯m going to add my own photography.
Free offer: If you¡¯re feeling stuck on the design part of the process, grab this free ebook showcasing . One of those examples is bound to spark some creativity in you.
Step 4: Add product/service information.
I suggest creating detailed listings for each item, including a clear title, description, and high-quality photos, because SEO technical guidelines matter for a successful site.
And, of course, add details like price, size, and stock availability if you¡¯re selling physical products.
For my services website, ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø¡¯s AI built a ¡°services¡± section on the homepage, which I found really useful. It was easy to add clickable buttons for customers to purchase each service by editing the module, turning on the ¡°Show button¡± toggle, and then selecting ¡°payment link¡± from the dropdown menu.

From there, I¡¯d need to set up payment processing in ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø to get it up and running for my clients.
Step 5: Set up payments and plan shipping.
It¡¯s time to set up payments and choose and integrate a payment processor, like Stripe or PayPal, into your online store.
You¡¯ll need to link your payment processor to your bank account to receive funds. Once that¡¯s set up, customers can check out smoothly, and you can manage transactions securely.
ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø's Free Website Builder
Create and customize your own business website with an easy drag-and-drop website builder.
- Build a website without any coding skills.
- Pre-built themes and templates.
- Built-in marketing tools and features.
- And more!
If you¡¯re hosting your site on ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø you¡¯ve got two options when it comes to accepting payments:
- Use payment links. A feature of Revenue Hub, can be one-time or recurring, and processed through ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø payments or Stripe.
- Add a third-party app. lets you add the shopping cart functionality to your ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø website. It also adds inventory management.
Pro tip: In order for payment links to work, you must first and get approved. If your business is outside of the U.S., U.K., or Canada, instead.
For my freelance writing site, it¡¯s easiest for me to use ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø payment links. All I have to do is create a unique link for each of my three plan tiers. Then, I can add a button that visitors can click to purchase the service.
To do this, I click the section of my site that I want to edit (the three columns showcasing my services). Then, in the website editor, I click the pencil icon next to ¡°Email Marketing Campaigns¡± to edit that specific card.

Once there, I type my desired Button text and go to the Link to dropdown menu and select Payment link. Under that, I click the Create payment link button.

Here in the Payment Links dashboard, I¡¯ll click Create a payment link and Use template.

Since I¡¯m selling an email marketing service, I¡¯ll select Professional services, then click Next.

Now, I¡¯ll enter the information for my service, including description, price, and billing frequency. Then, I¡¯ll click Save.

Lastly, I¡¯ll name my payment link ¡°Email Marketing¡± and click Create.

Tada! I now have a payment link for my email marketing service. I can even test it to ensure it works before I publish my site.

When I return to the website editor, I can add that payment link by clicking on the specific button and selecting ¡°Email Marketing¡± from the Payment link dropdown. See it below.

Now, my clients can book and pay for my services directly through my website.
But what if you¡¯re selling physical products and need to send them to your customers? That¡¯s where you¡¯ll need to set up shipping.
ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø¡¯s payments tool does not calculate shipping, but you can use third-party apps, such as the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø-certified app, to do so. Simply purchase a Shippy by Dijy subscription, and then install the app on your ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø site to configure it.

Step 6: Optimize your site for search.
Start with your buyer persona.
Revisit the buyer persona you made in step 1. This will inform your research, helping you home in on the keywords and prompts that your ideal customers are typing into Google or ChatGPT.
Identify target keywords and prompts.
Your potential buyers are using search engines like Google and answer engines like ChatGPT to find solutions. Be sure you create content on your ecommerce site that captures both audiences. This is known as search engine optimization (SEO) and answer engine optimization (AEO).
For SEO, use a keyword research tool like Semrush or Ahrefs. ±á±ð°ù±ð¡¯²õ one of the ways I use Ahrefs to find keywords to target, starting with its Keywords Explorer.
Start with obvious search terms you know your ideal customers might type into Google. Be sure to break up each individual keyword with a comma or a line break.

Click Search, and Ahrefs will show you that list of keywords, along with useful info such as how difficult it is to rank for that keyword (¡°KD¡± column below) and the average monthly search volume (¡°SV¡±).

I also love the ¡°¡± tab because it will suggest other keywords. You can also set a filter to find the low-competition, high-volume keywords. For example, I set mine to ¡°KD: Up to 30¡± and ¡°Volume: From 1K¡± and got a handy list of keywords to target.
Once you identify your target keywords, create content around these terms to improve your chances of appearing in search results. That¡¯s known as on-page SEO.
Be sure to consider the specifics of ecommerce SEO, including adding structured data such as:
- , which can help enrich how your product info appears in Google Search results, including showing ratings and price.

- schema, which helps Google understand when a product is a variant of a parent product (e.g., a 12 oz mug in green). This also helps prevent redundant information across variant pages, such as when you sell the same 12-oz mug in 10 different colors.
For AEO, begin by getting a baseline of where your brand currently stands with answer engines. Use ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø¡¯s free to get an overview of how ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity talk about your brand when prompted by users. I found the ¡°Analysis Summary¡± extremely useful because it gave me detailed feedback on my brand¡¯s strengths and weaknesses, which helped me understand what kind of content I need to publish to get LLMs like ChatGPT to surface my brand more favorably in their answers.

Once you¡¯ve got your AEO snapshot, it¡¯s time to get more granular with prompt research. For this, I highly recommend a dedicated AEO tool, such as (which has a ).
Similar to how Ahrefs helps you find the keywords people type into search engines, ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø AEO helps you find the prompts that your ideal customers might type into answer engines. Even better, if you upgrade to , you¡¯ll get CRM-connected prompt suggestions that are based on your unique business context.
If you used Shopify to build your site, you¡¯ve got access to , such as auto-generation of title tags that contain your store name.
Install Google Analytics.
Next, to track your website traffic, conversions, and user behavior. This is key to optimizing your SEO strategy.
Pro tip: Plan your content strategy and integrate the right keywords with .

Step 7: Launch and promote.
Launching your website makes it public on the internet. If it¡¯s not live, no one can find it. After you click that ¡°Publish¡± button, it¡¯s just the beginning of your ecommerce journey.
Post-launch, it¡¯s time to focus on driving traffic to your site. There are many ways to do this, including:
I¡¯ve never run ads for my freelance writing business, but being present on social media, especially LinkedIn, has proven extremely useful for my website.
I¡¯ve also had a lot of success with my other business websites performing well in organic search, thanks to the SEO-friendly blog content I¡¯ve written.
Experiment with different channels and stick with what works for you.

The Online Store Marketplace Today
Aspiring ecommerce founders often fear the market is oversaturated. So, I did some research.
In 2025, global ecommerce sales reached an estimated $6.4 trillion and are predicted to reach $7.886 trillion by 2028, according to .

That¡¯s overall positive news, but eMarketer warned that consumers were more cautious in 2025, slowing global ecommerce growth, but it predicted a likely rebound in 2026. Thus far, that prediction seems to be holding true, at least for U.S. sales. In the first quarter of 2026, ecommerce sales experienced an estimated boost of 9.8% from Q1 2025, according to the .
Ninety percent of shoppers identify as ¡°deal seekers,¡± meaning they¡¯re seeking the best price, per . Additionally, the DHL report states that free shipping is the number one motivator for online shoppers to complete a purchase.
So, taking all this into account, how can your ecommerce site succeed among cautious and budget-conscious consumers? Let¡¯s take a look at seven useful tips.
7 Tips for Selling Your Product Online (From the Experts)
Now that I¡¯ve walked you through how to create a website to sell products, it¡¯s time to reveal some juicy tips on starting your ecommerce business. I asked proven ecommerce professionals for their best advice. ±á±ð°ù±ð¡¯²õ what they shared with me.
1. Test the market first.
The nice thing about building a site with ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø is that you can do it for free. But before you invest in a premium plan or go all in on 200 orders of inventory, it¡¯s wise to test the market.
¡°Start small and scale as you iterate and learn. Having a mindset of experimentation is key,¡± says , an ecommerce coach and the founder of fair trade online shop .
Before investing more in your online store, Bar recommends trying to sell your product to at least 10 strangers on marketplaces like Etsy or eBay, or even at farmers¡¯ markets or pop-ups.
¡°If you can¡¯t get those first 10 sales or the feedback isn¡¯t what you expected, then don¡¯t give up, but take those learnings and either iterate or pivot,¡± she says. ¡°This is all a normal part of being a business owner.¡±
When Bar launched her ecommerce business, the product she was sure would be a hit ended up flopping. She pivoted to a different product line that took off unexpectedly and is still her best-seller five years later.
¡°You just don¡¯t know until you test the market and find your winner,¡± Bar says. ¡°I hear this all the time from my clients: A product that they made as an afterthought becomes the best-seller.¡±
2. Solve a long-term problem, not a short-term fad.
¡°Trends quickly fade away, particularly in an economically difficult time,¡± says , a project manager at Shopify Platinum Partner agency .
So while you might be tempted to ride the wave of the latest viral product, hit pause and consider whether your product is positioned for long-term growth.
¡°Remember the fidget spinner craze? Everyone was dropshipping them, but most failed because they chased the trend instead of thinking bigger,¡± Marmon adds. ¡°They should¡¯ve focused on the problem fidget spinners solved, like stress or focus, and built a catalog around that, not just one hype product.¡±
3. Provide a smooth experience for mobile shoppers.
Mobile shopping has become the norm. ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø¡¯s State of Consumer Trends report found that consumers (especially Gen Zers) now shop on their mobile phones more than on any other device.
You need to adapt to this. If your online store isn¡¯t mobile friendly, you¡¯ll miss out on sales.
¡°Offer a quick checkout option for mobile users,¡± says founder of . ¡°Simplify the process so they can fill their cart and pay with a single click. If you have an app, use push notifications to engage customers and remind them of special offers or abandoned carts.¡±
4. Gather user-generated content (UGC).
User-generated content (UGC) drove 6.73x higher conversion rates than non-UGC content in Q1 2026 ¡ª up 57% from Q4 2025, according to .
What does this mean for you?
Stop posting only generic pictures and professionally made videos on your site and social media. People want to see real people. Mix things up and show the human side of your brand.
According to Kasey Luck, there are three good ways you can take advantage of this:
- Create content that looks like user-generated content.
- Collaborate with influencers to feature your brand in their content.
- Motivate your existing customers to post about your brand by offering incentives and sharing their content.
Seeing products ¡°in the wild¡± has a powerful effect on shoppers. Think about it: How often have you relied on customer-submitted photos on Amazon to see how clothing fits on a real person before adding it to your cart?

5. Offer flexible payments to draw more shoppers.
Customers love flexible payment options. A 2025 found continued growth in Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) services, with Generations Y and Z using these services the most.
As of February 2026, the Klarna app had , with daily engagement surging about 53% compared to the previous year. Offering flexible payments like Klarna and PayPal is a great approach for drawing and keeping budget-conscious shoppers.

6. Write keyword-rich product listings.
Remember when we talked about SEO earlier? It¡¯s critical that you add those target keywords to your product pages, especially to the titles and descriptions. Otherwise, Google won¡¯t know what your page is about, and your customers won¡¯t find you.
, the founder of digital marketing studio , knows this all too well.
¡°I once worked with an ecommerce client who sold high-end modular couches,¡± she shares. ¡°During our initial call, he explained to me that anytime he does a search for ¡®modular couches,¡¯ or more specific searches like ¡®brown leather modular sofa¡¯ on Google, none of his products show up.
¡°He told me he was even running a Google Shopping campaign for his items with a very high CPC, and his items weren¡¯t showing up for any of the searches there either.¡±
The problem? ¡°All of his product titles were branded,¡± she says. ¡°For example, ¡®Bellini Sofa¡¯ and ¡®Luna Lounger.¡¯ While those product titles sounded luxurious, they lacked the descriptive keywords that people were searching for on Google.¡±
Norris went in and optimized his product titles and descriptions for search by adding the keywords his customers would type into Google. ¡°For example, we changed ¡®Bellini Sofa¡¯ to ¡®Bellini Modular Sofa in Brown Leather, 3 Piece Couch with Chaise.¡¯
¡°Within a few weeks, his click-through rates and impressions increased drastically. His products finally started showing up in organic search results and Google Shopping.¡±
7. Simplify checkout so you don¡¯t lose orders.
The average online shopping , according to the Baymard Institute.
After researching checkout usability for over 14 years, the show that poor checkout design is a major reason for cart abandonment, either due to user frustration or confusion.
This research benchmarks major ecommerce sites against over 110 guidelines, revealing that most sites perform at a ¡°mediocre¡± level or worse in the Cart & Checkout area. For the average large-scale ecommerce site, improving checkout usability could boost conversion rates by 35%.
That¡¯s why you need to simplify your checkout process as much as possible. Minimize the number of steps and required fields. Aim for a streamlined, user-friendly experience so customers can complete their purchases fast and easily. You¡¯ll reduce friction and increase the likelihood of conversion that way.
